Restaurant & Catering Australia (R&CA) has welcomed the Federal Government’s commitments to training more apprentices.
R&CA CEO John Hart said that both the Skilling Australians Fund and Industry Specialist Mentoring for Australian Apprentices Program, which were announced as part of the 2017-18 Federal Budget, will help address the massive skills shortages currently affecting the hospitality industry.
“The café and restaurant sector is expected to generate 84,300 jobs by November 2020 but this phenomenal employment growth will all go to waste if there aren’t enough people with the necessary skills to fill these jobs,” he said.
“We are pleased that the Government has recognised the important contribution of apprentices to the hospitality industry and other sectors by putting these programs in place.”
Hart also highlighted the significant difficulties associated with recruitment and retention in the hospitality industry which have created an urgent need for these Government programs.
“Traditionally, there has been quite a high drop-out rate associated with hospitality courses leading to an undersupply of skilled graduates with the necessary skills to fill vacant positions in the hospitality businesses,” he said. Read the entire article.
